Books from James Rollins and Diane Les Becquests start a reading blitz!
So this month has been an amazing month of reading, With three days left in the month, I have finished seven books and each one of them has been terrific! The first three The Hunting Wind by Steve Hamilton, Off the Grid from C.J. Box and Linwood Barclay‘s Far From True I have written about,But the next four books were finished in a reading blitz with an average of two to four days between books! That means immediately upon finishing one book, I was totally engrossed in the next book and I didn’t wan to stop reading to write about the previous book! Since there are still two more books on my library to be read (TBR) shelf Summit Lake from Charlie Donlea and Chris Kuzneski’s The Secret Crown, I still don’t want to stop to write four reviews! So I am going to do it in two posts! Here’s part one…….
Book 17 – The 6th Extinction James Rollins
I don’t think there are many authors who blend science, history and action together better than James Rollins. I read several of his early stand-alone novels before I read my first Sigma Force novel Map of Bones and since then I don’t think I’ve missed an installment in the series. One thing I love about James Rollins is that at the end of his books he always discusses the truth or fiction of the science or history contained in the book, In the 6th Extinction that discussion covers ten pages! The science discussed ranges from XNA, Jumping genes, De-Extinction, Extremophiles to Antarctic life and geology. While the history discussed includes Darwin’s Voyage on the Beagle and the Germans in Antarctica! Here’s an introduction to the novel from Goodreads…….
A remote military research station broadcasts a frantic distress call that ends with a chilling message: Kill us all. When soldiers arrive to investigate, they discover everyone in the lab is dead—not just the scientists, but every living thing for fifty square miles is annihilated: every animal, plant, and insect, even bacteria. The land is completely sterile—and the blight is spreading.
To prevent the inevitable, Commander Gray Pierce and Sigma must decipher a threat that rises out of the distant past, a time when Antarctica was green and Earth’s life balanced on a knife edge. Following clues from an ancient map rescued from the lost Library of Alexandria, Sigma will make a shocking discovery involving a prehistoric continent, and a new form of death buried under miles of ice. Bottom Line: The 6th Extinction is scary good, because most of the technological stuff is real and it’s scary!! The book gets 4.5 stars out of 5, Next up on the Rollins front is The Bone Labyrinth the latest Sigma Force adventure!
Book 18 Breaking Wild – Dianne Les Becquets.
I picked this book up on the day that I went to pick up another book that I had requested from the library. I started to read it and I literally could not put it down until I finished it! The book tells the story of Amy Raye Latour who on the last day of a hunting trip sets out to get her elk. Unlike her two male friends who were hunting with her, Amy was hunting with a crossbow, When her shot hits the elk but doesn’t bring it down she stalks the wounded animal over the Colorado mountains in a snowstorm – what could go wrong! She loses her way and is lost, among the search and rescuers is Pru Hathaway a strong woman who like Amy had come west to escape past tragedies The story alternates between Amy’s fight for survival and Pru’s fight to find out what really happened to Amy! The following two quotes provide great comments on the stirring novel……
“The sheer force of this book lies in the force of its two main characters. These are
complicated women [who are] defined…not by their histories, their loves, their mistakes, or their suffering, but by their actions. It makes for a powerful, visceral book about the incredible human capacity to transcend the limitations imposed by our own pasts and our own fears.”
— Tana French, New York Times Bestselling author of In The Woods
“Diane Les Becquets brings to life the story of two very different and captivating women, whose worlds collide through a series of unexpected and compelling circumstances. When one goes missing in the wilderness and the other sets out to find her, the pages practically turn themselves as the reader races through this harrowing and heart-wrenching tale, determined to discover how it all turns out.”
— John Searles, New York Times Bestselling author of Help For The Haunted and Strange But True
Bottom Line: Breaking Wild is another 4,5 star book! Both of the lead characters in this book are well-drawn and strong women and the way that Ms Les Becquets presents their story is wonderful, Each chapter provides a little more information about the life of Pru Hathaway and the fate and life of Any Raye and I tell you it’s tough to put the book down, because you just need to know the final outcome!
