Michael Robotham’s Life Or Death – (Book 5 of 2016)
Yesterday I finished book 5 for 2016 Life or Death from Michael Robotham and I certainly support its nomination for the 2016 Edgar Award for Best Novel. I have been a fan of Michael Robotham’s Joe O’Loughlin series for a long time now. The series is one of my favorites, but this is the first stand alone novel by Robotham that I have read. What surprised me most about the book’s Texas’ setting. The setting for the O’Loughlin series is England, which is surprising in an of its self considering Robotham is Australian, but Texas! Well, Robotham makes it work and he seems right at home with the setting!
The story centers around Audie Spencer Palmer, who escapes from prison the night before he is to be released! Palmer was serving a ten-year sentence for a Texas armored car robbery, that left four people dead and seven million dollars in unmarked bills missing! While Audie pleaded guilty to the robbery to avoid a death sentence, he always maintained his innocence. And now was Audie on the run to save his own life and recover the money, or was he running to find, and save someone else??
The pages flew by as Robotham told Audie’s story, in flashbacks, as Audie’s present collides with his past and the twists and turns were captivating! Audie is certainly a character who you can root for as he overcomes unbelievable obstacles to keep a promise made to the love of his life!
Bottom Line – Life or Death was certainly a five-star book for me. The characters were all well developed and believable, as is the story line. While I do believe that Audie would have been caught or killed well before the full story was unraveled, the ride was just so great I let Robotham take me away!! I don’t know if this was
Robotham’s best book or not, I think that may be one of the O’Loughlin books, but it was damn good, so check it out!
