So while I didn’t finish my current read last night, I got far enough that I was able to finish Book 17 for the year, James Rollins‘ sixth book in his Sigma Force series Bloodline, and in my humble opinion this may be the best book yet.You know I wrote, that throughout The Shadow Patrol, I kept waiting for that hook to come and really reel me into the story. Well in this book it came before the story even started, when after the Prologue, I read these words:
In U.S. history, three Presidents had died on the same day, July 4th, on the birthday of this country. It seemed beyond mere chance.
Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and James Monroe.
Today would be the fourth,
Studying his breath, Commander Gray Pierce pulled the trigger
and why because Gray Pierce is a Commander in the Sigma Force, so why is he assassinating the President? Got me right into the story.
The novel begins with the President’s pregnant daughter traveling incognito off the west coast of Africa and being kidnapped by Somali pirates!! The treasure that the pirates were after is not the ship or it’s contents, well actually one of the ship’s contents the President’s daughter! Soon the Sigma Force is sent to rescue her and the story develops from there. As the Sigma Force again must battle The Guild, and the family that may be the driving force behind it, the Gant family, which just happens to be the President’s family! (Sigma Director Painter Crowe had learned at the end of the previous book, The Devil Colony that the Gant family was a driving force in the Guild) Huh, they captured their own family member, now there’s another hook for you! Nobody weaves historical facts and current technologies into a story better than James Rollins and this novel is no exception. I’ll let Goodreds.com tell you more!

But as much as the storylines are great in Rollins’ novels it’s the development of the characters from book to book,that make these books stand out for me. From the aforemention Gray Pierce, who is still recovering from the death of his mother at the hands of the Guild, to Seichan a former assasin with the Guild who is still balancing feelings for Gray with the pain of her past, to Lisa Cummings and Painter Crowe the leader of th Sigma Forces and in this book the introduction of a new character Tucker Wayne and his Army War Dog, Kane, it’s these characters that make the books special to me. Oh, I forgot Kowalski and Monk and Kat!
While the books can probably be read out of order I think wherever you start after the first book you should go back and start at the beginning to get the full effect of everything that they been through and Rollins in Bloodlines does a good job of setting up the storyline for more adventures to come!!
