So the Doofus of the Day Award for yesterday goes to yours truly. As he went to work at 3:00 yesterday in the midst of the torrential downpour only to discover that he was not scheduled to start work until 6:00! When he returned to work at 6:00, he discovered that both people scheduled to work in front of him had called out!! Oye what a night!
Anyway, today was a jazz day at work a nice mix a little Miles, a little Coltrane, some Montgomery Brothers, Jimmy Smith, and Gary Burton. A couple of times I checked to see who it was, and it was Larry Coryell with the Wide Hive Players. I put that album on the player a while back and every time a track pops up I like it! Another time I checked and it was Medeski, Martin and Wood Shack- Man another album that I picked up and forgot about, but after hearing that track I will have to give the whole album another listen!
After work since my knee didn’t hurt and the temperature was still ok I went for a run. A 5k course at a little over 10 minute mile pace. This is the first time that I’ve run with only one day of rest, so I guess that’s pretty good! The soundtrack for my run was The Eric Steckel Band’s 2006 release Havana. I heard Eric Steckel on XM Radio in day in the way home at lunch and quickly put this album on the iPod and it has been in heavy rotation ever since then. The Eric Steckel Band’s debut CD, “A Few Degrees Warmer”, was recorded live in April 2002 when Eric was just 11 years old.
In 2003 the “ESB” appeared at the Sarasota Blues Festival where Eric’s powerful set became the talk of the day. Before the night was over Eric was introduced by John Mayall as the youngest guitarist ever on stage with the Bluesbreakers. Eric left a lasting impression on Mayall and in 2004 Eric appeared in Sweden, Norway and Denmark with Mayall and The Bluesbreakers during their Scandinavian Tour. In early 2005 Eric traveled to Los Angeles where he joined Mayall for session work on the “Road Dogs” record.
Let’s see in 2006 when Havana was released Eric was just 15 years old! Wow, if you’ve never heard this guy listen! It’s really a great album I’ve listened briefly to his latest release Milestone and I like the energy and drive of Havana a little better and with that being said I’ll probably listen to Milestone tomorrow and reverse my opinion! That’s the way of the Doofus! So now it’s back to Karin Slaughter’s Fallen!
